Around 500,000 people grew up in institutional ‘care’ in Australia during the first half of the 20th century. Many experienced abuse and neglect as children and have lived with the ongoing legacy of complex trauma.

As adults, who are now ageing, and entering aged care facilities, the return to institutional living can be highly challenging, bringing the potential for re-traumatisation.

This webinar will introduce evidence-based knowledge on the impacts of childhood trauma in care and the lived experience of these people, who are referred to as Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers.

It will help social workers gain an understanding of how to prevent re-traumatisation in aged care settings and identify and respond to trauma behaviours.

Who should register? Social workers working with older people who may identify as Forgotten Australians or other care leavers.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

• Identify who Forgotten Australians and other care leavers are
• Understand the basics of neurophysiological and psychological impacts of childhood trauma experiences in care
• Identify triggers and other symptoms that Forgotten Australians and other care leavers may display gain insight into a therapeutic group program with adults who have experienced childhood trauma in care
• Locate suitable resources for Forgotten Australians and other care leavers
